St. Martin’s Day, known as Martinovanje, is a cherished and widely celebrated tradition in Slovenia. This iconic holiday, falling on November 11th, marks the transformation of must into wine and serves as a symbolic farewell to autumn and the beginning of winter. Slovenians come together to honor this occasion with a range of festivities, including feasts with traditional dishes such as roasted goose, duck, or turkey, complemented by hearty side dishes and the famous mlinici, slovene pasta tatters. The day is also significant for blessing the new wine, with various ceremonies taking place at local vineyards and wineries. People wear traditional costumes and partake in processions, wine tastings, and lively entertainment. St. Martin’s Day is not only a time for gastronomic delights but also a moment for community bonding and paying homage to the rich viticultural heritage of Slovenia.
